Emergency Medical Technician

 

General Summary:

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) position is responsible for participating in emergency medical services, and other emergency response duties along with public education, fire prevention, training, administrative assignments, and maintenance activities. 

 

Reports Relationships:

This individual may work alone or as a team member, under the direct supervision of the Fire Chief or subordinate Officer designated by the Chief.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

The duties described below are indicative of what an EMT may be asked to perform.  Other duties may be assigned.

 

  • Operates tools and equipment in accordance with department policies and procedures as an individual or team member.
  • Responds to emergency calls as a member of an engine crew, or medical unit (Ambulance).
  • Performs a variety of technical and manual labor duties required for forcible entry and extrication of persons from structures, vehicles, etc... and other duties of an EMTas assigned.
  • Performs EMS skills providing basic/advanced life support services in accordance with department policies, procedures and appropriate standards of care.
  • Be a public representative of the fire department to help inform persons of the benefit of sound fire prevention practices.
  • Participates in the cleaning, maintenance, and restocking of: apparatus, apparatus quarters, building, equipment, grounds, and other related work as required.
  • Participates in training classes to maintain and enhance personal technical skills; regularly searches for improvements in technology to further the department and overall operations.  May participate in and/or instruct in-station training activities.
  • Helps develop and participates in fire prevention activities, public education programs, tours, lectures, etc. assigned by the chief or their designee, as a department representative individually or as part of a team.
  • If qualified, may be assigned as a driver, and acting line officer in certain situations.
  • Attends department business meetings and other meetings assigned by the chief.
  • Follows department policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Is aware of, observes, practices and promotes to other employees all safety rules and measures as appropriate and necessary; performing all tasks in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Provides feedback and recommendations inherent to the goals and long range planning of the fire department and related services.
  • Performs other related duties as may be required.

 

Education and /or Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent
  • Current State licensed EMT or the ability to obtain within one year
  • Familiar with Wisconsin Administrative Code – Comm. 30, Trans 309, HSS110, OSHA Standard 29 CFR 1910
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license

 

Desired Education and /or Experience:

  • Wisconsin Certified Fire Fighter Level 1

 

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to cooperate and work well with other staff and the public.
  • Familiar with and understands fire department structure, organizational responsibilities and authority.
  • Ability to accomplish tasks and work individually or through cooperative effort with other individuals.
  • Acts as a professional representative presenting oneself as a calm, knowledgeable, efficient, and effective public servant.
  • Ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Thorough knowledge of EMS practices, emergency rescue procedures, and life saving techniques.
  • Ability to command an emergency situation.
  • Ability to work in extreme conditions of danger, stress, weather, hazardous atmosphere, excessive vibration, noise, confined workspaces, heights, unstable terrain, and extended periods of physical activity.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with other staff, other departments, and the public.
  • Knowledge of basic math.
  • Ability to define problems and deal with a variety of situations, think quickly, maintain self-control, adapt to stressful situations, use good judgment and effectively solve problems.
  • Ability to plan work, assign work, and establish priorities.
  • Drive department vehicles in an emergency and non-emergency mode
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, run, climb (stairs, steps, ladders, scaffolding, trees, etc.), balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, bend, crawl, reach, twist, lift, push, pull, grasp, pick, pinch, feel, press, talk, hear/listen, see/observe, work with repetitive motion, etc.

 

Equipment Used/ Not Limited To:

  • Office equipment (telephone, computer, copy machine, fax machine, calculator, etc.)
  • Technical equipment (camera, video recorder, power point, etc.)
  • Hand tools (hammer, wrenches, screwdrivers, gages, templates, pry bars, etc.)
  • Vehicles (pick up trucks, ambulance, engines, tankers, etc.)
  • Medical equipment (first aid equipment- est.20lbs, oxygen, patient lifting devices- Cots, needles, defibrillator, etc.)
  • Personal protective equipment (protective clothing Turn –out gear weighting est. 30- 40lbs, hearing and eye protection, etc.)

 

Additional requirements:

  • Applicants must be minimum 18 years of age.
  • Will be on probation for a minimum of one year from starting date.
